Nepal update

There have been a few recent developments in Nepal where there is growing unrest against the King's hardline stance. The Maoists recently entered into talks with the exiled politicians in India, the King of course was absent on diplomatic manouveres in Africa. The rebels have also extended their unilateral ceasefire and may be slowly trying to move back into the political arena. Despite mounting international pressure, the King's latest response rules any hopes of a two way ceasefire with the Maoists. Meanwhile Kathmandu recently saw its largest demonstrations in favour of a return to democracy.

Haven't heard from my guide for a while. Last time he emailed, he seemed despondent that there wasn't enough work as less people are travelling to the country. Its a real shame, as the reality is, the main tourist areas are very safe. Will this year bring about any change in the deadlock ? Now could be the time with the short autumn tourist season over and forthcoming municipal elections planned for February. With the Maoists threatening to disrupt the elections with violence, the tension is only likely to increase further.
